FOURTEEN

The chair—pulled from the top of the abandoned stack at the side of the room—was old, and some of the cross-bracing had weakened over the years of use, so it shattered. Still, the force with which it hit was pretty solid; it caused Billy to drop down onto all fours.

“You mean, better like that, bitch?” Shawn taunted.

He didn’t wait for a reply, but brought his foot up into Billy’s side. There was a whoosh of air from Billy’s mouth, along with a long groan of pain.

Billy rolled over so he was face down on the concrete, trying to get up before more kicks came his way.

“Yeah, nail his ass!” Nathan yelled.

Kyle—taken aback by the sudden attack on this kid—asked, “Are we actually doing this?”

“Fuck yes, we’re doing this,” Nathan replied, as he delivered a kick of his own to Billy’s other side. “I’m not going to be the next fucking Satanic ritual sacrifice like Trent here. If he did that to his friend, what the hell do you think he’s planning on doing to us?”

“Alright…” Kyle said, stepping forward to kick the shit out of Billy, then pausing. “Okay—what the fuck is he doing?”

Billy was on his knees, but bent over with his elbows tucked in at his sides. His hands were moving up and down as if in a palsied state, pumping as if he was psyching himself up. His head was bowed, but it started bobbing up and down along with his arms. Unintelligible words began issuing forth from his mouth like a Pentecostal churchgoer speaking in tongues.

“I don’t know and I don’t fucking care,” Nathan snapped. “Kick the ever-loving fuck out of that piece-of-shit kid.”

Billy’s voice dropped to a lower register. The voice wasn’t his or Trent’s; it was someone else’s. Something else’s. To the others in the room, it sounded as though some terrifying demon from the depths of hell had just spoken through Billy. His body continued to shake harder.

Kyle moved to deliver the kick ordered by Nathan, but Billy turned his head and locked his sights on Shawn. He scurried forward suddenly on all fours like a vicious, rabid dog and bit into Shawn’s lower leg. Julie screamed out a warning that came too late.

Shawn yelped in surprise at Billy’s advance toward him, then yelled even louder when Billy bit deep into his calf muscle. He shifted the weight off his leg and shook Billy off, kicking at him. Billy shifted away. Kyle saw him stand and shove his hand into his pocket. When he pulled it out, he gave it a flick of his wrist as if snapping someone with a towel. Kyle saw a hint of metal, one of those foldable knives.

“He’s got a knife!” Julie yelled.

Billy was already advancing on Shawn again, stabbing at him as he dove toward his body. He buried the blade deep into the thick, fleshy part of Shawn’s thigh.

Shawn jumped when he felt the sharp bite of the blade, and tried to backpedal away. He tried
